In keeping with our desire to have the Twincesses spend more time outdoors and away from the vice of technology, we recently invested in having a Jungle Gym installed in our backyard.
To be honest I put off the decision for a long while for 2 reasons that proved to be mere myths:
– I wouldn’t be able to afford a jungle gym
– We don’t have the space for one
However, as mentioned those are just myths, because there are several companies operating the greater Durban area that provide value for money options; and jungle gyms come in every size under the sun, with options that can be fully customized to fit your space.
We worked with a gem of a guy named Marius from Jungle Kids, who provided us with a customized option at a price that could not be beat.
If you’re sitting on the fence about whether you should invest in a Jungle Gym for your kids, here are 7 reasons to go for it:
1. Increases Muscle tone
Regular exercise that can be provided by manoeuvring on a jungle gym is said to increase muscle tone in children.
2. Developmental Play
Your child’s imagination can soar when playing on a jungle gym. A simple deck becomes a pirate ship, a covered enclosure converts into a castle. Let their imaginations run wild whilst they engage in best form of free play: developmental play.
3. Improves balance and coordination
Movements performed on a jungle gym promote coordination of the body, but also improves hand eye coordination, like swinging on monkey bars. Climbing, sliding and swinging also promotes and increases balance.
4. Sharing and Cooperation
I put out some colouring books and crayons and watch the Twincesses fight over every colour in the box. But on the jungle gym, they seem to cooperate intrinsically. They share, and play together like nowhere else! I don’t know what it is that causes this immediate collaboration, but I like it!
5. Bonding time
In addition to bonding with each other, the jungle gym gives me the opportunity to bond with the girls as well. Whether I’m cheering them on the ramp, clapping as they come down the slide or pushing them on the swing, these precious moments create memories more treasured than say, watching Frozen for the hundredth time!
6. Improves self confidence
Whether your child is afraid of heights or needs help navigating the rope ramp, the moment they finally master these obstacles brings an immense increase in self-esteem. These accomplishments might not seem like much to us, but to a little child the boost in confidence can be invaluable.
7. Grows with the Kid
I see the jungle gym as a long term investment. It’s not something your child will be bored of in a month or two. As they grow, the will discover new ways to push themselves, new ways to manoeuvre, and therefore new ways to use and enjoy their jungle gym.
I would like to think that with the proper maintenance our Jungle Gym will bring many years of enjoyment for the Twincesses.
